2020 Young Scholars Graduates

The in-person Hank and Billye Aaron Young Scholars Summer Research Institute was cancelled this summer due to Covid-19. Programming occurred remotely for our three graduating seniors who entered college in Fall 2020. Those three students will be presenting their research at the Summer 2021 capstone conference. Below are their bios and their completed research papers:

Oyinkansola (Oyinkan) Ajasa is a rising freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She enjoys being an active member in her community, reading, singing, and spending quality time with her friends and family. Oyinkan’s research focused on the correlation between gentrification and education and how it impacts low income students of color.

Oyinda Ajasa is a rising freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She enjoys reading, learning more about other cultures, exercising, and cooking. Oyinda wrote her research about the lack of Black women in STEM fields. Oyinda looks forward to continuing research in college but hopes to engage in scientific research.

Genevieve Furges is a freshman at Hollins University. She plans to major in Communication studies. She enjoys writing, reading, and film criticism. She did her project on the impact the literacy gap has on the black community and the ways to avoid the negative effects.
