Founding Director William A. “Sandy” Darity, Jr., professor of public policy at Duke University, was quoted in Chalkbeat article examining controversial remarks made by presidential candidate Joe Biden regarding Black parents and literacy. Biden faced criticism for repeated comments that many interpreted as reinforcing stereotypes about Black families and low-income communities.

In response, Darity emphasized the broader implications of such rhetoric:

From my standpoint, it does matter. The repetition of these ideas… does affect the kind of social policies we choose to adopt.”
