John Purakal recognized as Sullivan Award Recipient in Duke Today

Faculty Affiliate John Purakal was recently featured in Duke Today as one of the three recipients of the 2025 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. Purakal is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine. His research interests include social drivers of health, racial & ethnic disparities of emergency care, and cardiovascular disease. Through his early career, Dr. Purakal has worked to advance Social Emergency Medicine, both at Duke University and across the country.

Purakal said his efforts in the community and at Duke has been led by a belief that ‘the emergency room can be a powerful place for identifying people with social needs and connecting them with resources. For the people we serve, this can be a gateway to better outcomes.'”
