Cook Center Commissioned Article on HBCUs published in Du Bois Review

What Effect Does Being a Historically Black College/University Have on Endowments?

In research funded by the Cook Center, Dr. Gregory Price examines this relationship in new research published in the Du Bois Review. Dr. Price is a Professor of Economics at the University of New Orleans and was mentor in the first cohort of DITE.

This article estimates several causal counterfactual parameters of the effect of being an HBCU on college/university endowment, and on the probability of a college/university failing as a function of its financial health. As a result, Dr. Price suggest two public policy interventions to reduce the endowment disparity, including tax subsidies for contributions/gifts to HBCUs relative to non-HBCUs, and a distribution of reparations to the descendants of Black American Slaves, which would result in larger endowment contributions to HBCUs.
