Aaron Young Scholar Akanke Mason-Hogans nominated for the 2025 Beginning Teacher of the Year award at Durham Public Schools

We are proud to celebrate Hank & Billye Suber Aaron Young Scholar Akanke Mason-Hogans in her recognition by The Beginning Teacher Support Program. In a recent post by the Durham Public School Mentors, they displayed all nominees for the recognition. The DPS Beginning Teacher Support Program provides one-on-one service from District BT Mentors and School-Based Mentors; quarterly BT support sessions; monthly and quarterly professional development sessions facilitated by District Mentors.

Akanke is a graduate of Josephine Dobbs Clement Early College High School, a chemical engineering graduate of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and graduate from Duke's Master of Arts in Teaching Program. She currently teaches science at Riverside High School.

In 2016, Akanke started the Hank & Billye Suber Aaron Young Scholar Summer Institute completing a group research presentation titled, "Colorism's Impact on Society". She returned for the 2017 institute cycle, completing a research poster, "A Culture of Community: Why HBCUs Matter for Black Students". She completed the program with her research paper, "The Achievement Gradient: The Effects of Colorism on Student Achievement in K-12 Schools".
