Dr. Malik Chaka Edwards is the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Scholarly Enrichment and John D. Fassett Professor of Law. He is an interdisciplinary scholar whose work explores the use of social and systemic supports to understand racial disparities and to develop remedies to address these disparities. Dr. Edwards has collaborated with scholars from broad fields such as economics, sociology, public health, and human development to facilitate solution-focused strategies and policies for education and social inequities. Dean Edwards received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education in the Education Policy Program and his J.D. from New York University School of Law.
Dr. Edwards co-edited an adolescence development textbook, Adolescence: Development During a Global Era. In this book, Dr. Edwards illustrated how education policies and criminal justice reforms must consider developmental processes to be effective and just. His scholarship has included law review articles, peer-reviewed journals, and book chapters that explore the use of social science evidence in equity contexts. Dr. Edwards connects his scholarship to his teaching of Constitutional Law, Property, Administrative Law, and Education Law.
Dr. Edwards is committed to increasing minority representation in the legal profession through collaborations across NCCU’s campus and among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). He has been successful in gaining extramural funding to support NCCU School of Law’s pipeline efforts. As principal investigator, he helped NCCU law to become the first HBCU to receive a Law School Admission Council PLUS Grant. Dr. Edwards has worked with units across the campus on Title III and HBCU UP Grants.
