“There has always been a politically contested terrain in sports,” said William “Sandy” Darity, a professor in the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University and director of the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity. “For people to talk about keeping politics out of sports, well, that’s never been the case. Go back to the great boxing fights and the position of Jack Johnson. But now there is almost this overemphasis on how we process things played out in sports.”
